Spanish Immersion for Clergy

    Sister Margaret Carney, President of St. Bonaventure University, writes, “Effective Church ministry in the cultural reality of the United States requires serious attention to the prominence of the Spanish language as the prime or preferred medium of communication for an increasing number of U.S. Catholics. Failure to cultivate a bilingual competence will increasingly be seen as failure to read the signs of the times that every agent of the church must cultivate in order to be credible.” The Querétaro Language School Spanish Immersion for Clergy course was created in order to help clergy persons and lay workers meet this growing need.

    The city of Querétaro is the ideal location in Mexico for clergy persons and lay workers not only to immerse themselves in Spanish, but also to learn about Mexican Catholicism. The city of Querétaro was founded by Catholic missionaries as a center of study in Mexico and there are over 45 Catholic orders present in the centro histórico itself, including the Franciscan, Dominican, Augustine, Carmelites, Teresas, Capuchinas and more. Priests and Nuns who study Spanish at the Querétaro Language School typically arrange accommodations with the chapters of their own orders.

    A large majority of the Spanish teachers at QLS are practicing Catholics and there are some teachers on staff who take courses at some of the local seminaries. This knowledge of both Spanish and the Catholic faith is what makes QLS one of the leading providers of Spanish immersion courses in Mexico.

    The Spanish Immersion for Clergy program lasts for 4 hours a day, and is divided into three segments:

• 1.5 hours of Structure.
• 1.5 hours of Practice and Uses.
• 1 hours of Communicative Practice.
